About Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Host Organizations and Sponsored Organization

ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur


With his vision of upliftment rural communities as a necessary step towards all-round development of society, His Holiness Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji has initiated the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in 1994 in Suttur - a village located on the scenic surroundings of the river Kapila in Nanjangud taluk, Mysore district. It is the culmination of the vision of His Holiness and the response of the host insitution JSS Mahavidyapeetha to the growing needs of the farming community in the district. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, supports this project through its zonal coordinating office i.,e Agriculture Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Zone-XI based in Bangalore. Introducing new technology options through on-farm testing, frontline demonstrations, training and encouraging the farmers to adopt appropriate technologies for their socio-economic well being is the overarching purpose of the KVK.

Activities

  • Conducting on-farm testing to identify the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems.
  • Organizing frontline demonstrations to establish production potential of various crops and enterprises on the farmers’ fields.
  • Organizing need based training of farmers to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies related to technology assessment, refinement and demonstration, and training of extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development.
  • Creating awareness about improved technologies to larger masses through appropriate extension programmes.
  • Production, supply of good quality seeds, planting materials and various bio-products to the farming community.
  • Work as resource and knowledge centre of agricultural technology for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district.

Host Organization - JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru

Jagadguru Sri Shivarathrishwara Mahavidyapeetha (JSS MVP) is founded and nurtured by the esteemed lineage of the Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasan Mahasamsthana Math of Suttur in Mysuru. Which has a history of over 1050 years. Established in the year 1954, JSS MVP is an expansion of the Math's activities aimed at developing an equitable and value based society. JSS MVP is striving towrds all-round development of people through its contribution in the field of education, health, art and culture. Being a charitable institution JSS MVP has poineered the concept of education as a means for social transformation. JSS institutions are located in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh in India and Dubai, USA in abroad. Presently, JSS MVP runs over 300 institutions offering a wide range of educational opportunities to hundreds and thousands of students to have socio-culturally and economically rich and meaningful life.

Sponsored Organization - ICAR ATARI, Bengaluru

The Agricultural Extension Division, one of the eight divisions of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, has established a nation-wide network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). The KVKs are hosted by ICAR institutes, SAUs, State Government Departments and NGOs with 100 per cent financial support of Government of India. The Agricultural Extension Division headed by the Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension) monitors and reviews the progress of KVKs through 11 ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARI) located in the country. The ATARI, Zone-XI is one among them.

Genesis

The ICAR established eight Zonal Coordinating Units (ZCUs) in 1979 to monitor and coordinate the Lab to Land Programme (LLP) launched on the occasion of ICAR’s Golden Jubilee (1979). The ZCU was upgraded as Zonal Project Directorate (ZPD) in March 2009 and as Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARI) since July 2015. As per the Reorganization of Zones, ICAR-ATARI,Bengaluru became Zone XI w.e.f. April 2017 covering Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Details are given below:
