Best KVK Award

Presented by National Centre for Banana, Tirchy, Tamil Nadu

The ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana in Tiruchirappalli, India, is delighted and honored the "BEST KVK" award to ICAR JSS KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA during 30th Foundation Day and Kisan Mela celebrations on 21st August 2023 (Monday) at ICAR-NRCB, Tiruchirappalli.

The KVK has been working on enhancing productivity and profitability of Banana farming from its inception in the year 1994-1995. Major interventions by KVK in Banana cultivation with a focus on Integrated Nutrient Management and Integrated Pest & Disease Management. There was concerted effort on control of rhizome weevil; sigatoka disease and fusarium wilt through demonstration of chemical and biological means (IPDM). KVK has promoted good number of intercrops in Banana, especially taking up marigold, water melon, mangaluru cucumber, cabbage, cauliflower, tomato etc., and another important intervention is the introduction of farm level ripening technology using low cost poly cover ripening chambers and use of ethrel in ripening.

The KVK eventually introduced High density Banana planting technology for effective management of available natural resource and for improvement of quality and profitability of the farmers. The KVK however recognized the fact that the hidden hunger – deficiency of secondary and micro nutrients is the major reason behind the low yields in banana. Therefore, the significant intervention on part of KVK since 2009 has been the promotion of Banana special, a micronutrient foliar spray, to enhance the good quality and yield of the crop. The KVK after having popularized Banana special in the district procured the technology from IIHR Bengaluru and got its staff trained in producing the formulation.

KVK established JSS Agri clinic in 2013 July, it gave further fill-up to spread of banana related technologies to the farmers. So far after buying the technology, approximately covered 2289 ha Banana area and over 4500 farmers benefitted in almost all parts of Karnataka state. In a span of 12 years, the KVK has succeeded in taking the new technology to about 35 % of banana farmers, thus reaching a critical mass. The technical and commercial success of Banana Special makes it a case of ‘Market-led extension’. As efforts of the KVK, there has been a constant increasing the area and productivity of the Banana in the district. An average of increment of area is about 30% along with the productivity is about 15-20%. In banana var. Grand Nain productivity increased from 62 tons/ha to 111 tons/ha, In Banana var. Ellaki productivity increased from 19.7 tons/ha to 34.5 tons/ha and in Banana var. Nendra 37 ton/ha to 47tons/ha.

Considering these works of ICAR JSS KVK related to Banana in Mysuru district, on the occasion of Kisan Mela at ICAR NRCB, Tiruchirappalli, honored "BEST KVK AWARD".
