Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mysuru, is consistently working towards bringing positive transformation in the agricultural community through need-based On-Farm Trials (OFTs), Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs), training programmes, and extension activities. The KVK also provides exposure to emerging agricultural technologies and enterprises through the involvement of young and dynamic Subject Matter Specialists and technical staff.
ICAR-JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur, Mysuru, has undertaken several comprehensive and intensive programmes across diverse areas, including Agronomy, Plant Protection, Horticulture, Animal Science, Home Science, and Seed Technology. These programmes are aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening the knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial capabilities of farmers, farm women, rural youth, and other stakeholders.
ICAR-JSS KVK, Mysuru, is committed to the effective transfer and dissemination of agricultural technologies to all sections of the farming community in the district. Its primary objective is to enhance farmers' income by reducing the cost of production, promoting efficient use of resources, and encouraging resource-conservation and sustainable farming practices.
The ICAR JSS KVK also focuses on creating sustainable income-generating opportunities for farm women and rural youth through the promotion of agri-based enterprises, value addition, entrepreneurship, and integrated farming system models. Through its various initiatives, ICAR-JSS KVK strives to empower the agricultural community by promoting the efficient utilization of available resources, addressing location-specific challenges, and facilitating the timely identification and adoption of appropriate technological solutions.
Through continuous interaction with farmers and other stakeholders, the KVK serves as an important link between agricultural research and field-level application, contributing to sustainable agricultural development and improved livelihoods in Mysuru district.
As part of the birth anniversary celebrations of the father of horticulture, Dr. M. H. Marigowda, the National Horticulture Day and Butternut Field Festival were organized on Friday, 07.08.2026, in collaboration with ICAR-JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur; ICAR-IIHR Central Horticultural Experimental Station, Chettahalli; Department of Horticulture, Mysore; and Institute of Agricultural Technicians (IAT), Mysore, at the premises of Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Dr. Vishakanta, Retired Joint Director of Agriculture, said that in recent times, there has been good demand for butternut in the market >Nanjangud Assistant Director of Horticulture, Shri. Chandru, spoke about various schemes and subsidies of the Horticulture Department Sri. Shivashankarappa, Director of Horticulture, JSS Mahavidyapeeth, shared the life achievements of the father of horticulture, Dr. M. H. Marigowda, his immense contribution to the growth of the horticulture sector in Karnataka. Dr. Gnanesh B.N., Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, who presided over the programme, said that the main objective of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra is to provide scientific information on new horticultural crops to farmers as part of the National Horticulture Day celebrations. During the technical session, Dr. Muralidhar, Scientist, ICAR-IIHR, Chettahalli, provided detailed information on the history of butternut; the background of its popularization in Karnataka More than 120 farmers from various districts, including Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan, participated in the programme and benefited from the event.
A training programme on snail farming, snail mucin-based cosmetic and therapeutic products, and entrepreneurship opportunities was organized on 11.08.2026 at JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysore. The programme was organized by the JSS Higher Education and Research Academy, School of Life Sciences, ICAR-JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in collaboration with Auric Castro India Private Limited (Snail It), for farmers, rural entrepreneurs, members of self-help groups, students, and others interested in starting a snail farming business. During the programme, participants were informed that the perception that snails necessarily destroy crops in the field and spread diseases is not always correct. With proper understanding and appropriate management, snails can be utilized as a potential source of income. Farmers were informed that they can protect and rear suitable snails found in their fields and sell them for use by the beauty and related industries.
ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra celebrated Parthenium Weed Management Week from 16–22 August 2026. As part of the programme, farmers and staff removed Parthenium weeds growing around the fields and KVK premises. On this occasion, subject matter experts (agriculturalists) explained that Parthenium weed is a green shrub-like plant that grows to about 1 to 1.5 metres in height. Its leaves resemble radish leaves and it produces small white flowers. The weed spreads very rapidly along roadsides, vacant lots, and agricultural lands. The Parthenium plant contains a toxic chemical called ‘Parthin’, which can cause several health problems. Direct contact with the plant may cause severe skin inflammation, itching, and black spots on humans. The plant also releases large quantities of pollen. When the pollen becomes airborne and enters the body through breathing, it can cause asthma, sneezing, and allergic sinus problems. Experts also explained that if cows, buffaloes, sheep, or goats consume Parthenium weed, they may develop mouth ulcers and skin diseases, and the quantity and quality of milk may be reduced. They further stated that Parthenium weed can be controlled through manual uprooting, release of Mexin beetles, or the application of chemical herbicides such as glyphosate and 2,4-D.
In collaboration with Dhan Foundation, Nanjangud, a programme on the construction and maintenance of nutritional home gardens and the distribution of seed kits to farmers and farm women for nutritional security was organized on 17.08.2026 at ICAR-JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur.
The Senior Scientist and Head of the Centre said that it is very important for women to establish and maintain home gardens for nutritional security. He emphasized that consuming fresh vegetables as part of the daily diet helps in maintaining good health. The chief guest of the programme, Shri Prakash, Director, Dhan Foundation, Nanjangud, said that various training programmes are being organized at JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra and urged farmers and farm women to make use of these programmes. KVK Subject Matter Specilists provided comprehensive information on the establishment and maintenance of nutritional gardentsMore than 60 farm women participated in the programme and benefited from the training. Nutritional home garden kits and saplings were distributed to the farmers and farm women who attended the programme.
